"The aeroplane will never fly." -- Lord Haldane, Minister of War, Britain, 1907. And yet, one year later, in 1908, Orville and Wilbur Wright made over 200 flights across Europe. Fifty years later, Sir Harold Spencer Jones, Astronomer Royal of Britain, is quoted saying, "Space travel is bunk.” two weeks before the launch of Sputnik in 1957. Now, in 2016, NASA is prepping for manned trips to Mars. History is replete with many self-important and so-called ‘experts’ who doubt the significance of the evolution of man’s technology and its uses. What does the more distant future look like? Will we have interstellar travel? How will we get there? In one-thousand years how will the history books explain how our civilization evolved past the lunacy of war, world hunger, and unrecoverable depletion of our planets resources? Looking back from the future how will they describe our transition from genocides, countries going bankrupt, dictatorships, and poverty? I would like to think that we came together as one people determined to protect our planet from ourselves and held each other accountable for acts against the environment and humanity. I would insist that the world took action against the violation of human rights and we purged the world of the atrocities of war. I would conjecture that the population set up for ourselves social systems that worked for the benefit of all. Does it sound like science fiction? It should not. Two-thousand years ago man scoffed at the idea of flight and fantasies of lunar landings. Yet here we are and we are on the verge of even greater things. We are at the beginning of a much changed world. Where will we go next? How will we get there? Can I offer some considerations?
Although it is a relatively new technology, the internet is given birth to some very impressive ideas. Social media is one of those children born from the internet. The social media has integrated itself into our daily routines. Social media has been able to keep us connected to family and friends. It has introduced us to new ideas and concepts. It influences millions of people towards trends and is curtailing their decisions through advertising and networking. What if, instead of trending the latest Hollywood gossip, sharing cat videos, or inviting Facebook friends to join Candy Crush, we used such social medias to connect people to the concerns of the planet? What if there was a social media that influenced people to strive for a world free from war and poverty? We have the current technology for it. Millions of people are already using social media on a daily basis. How can we use this platform to further the necessity for global changes?
Public awareness leads to public action. Culture is created based on the majority consensus and can influence people to take care of our home, planet Earth. It is a social responsibility. Please let me introduce to you Social Media Network Entertainment. Based on a social media game concept I have christened, “Interactive Reality Entertainment”, this platform combines the efforts of social media, networking, and gaming. Consider the games found on Facebook such as Candy Crush, Bejeweled, and Farmville. These games were designed for the players to invite their friends to play and in exchange the player will get more lives. The more friends that joined the more opportunities to grow your crops, expand your empire, or reach another level. What I propose is to use this strategy to further the cause of saving our planet by engaging people using the current activities we are already practicing.
